Nov 13, 2022 · On July 14, 1970, Seattle restaurateurs Julia and Francois Kissel hold a dinner party and parade in Pioneer Square to celebrate Bastille Day, France’s national holiday, a celebration that will culminate in a terrible accident that leaves onlooker Shelly Bauman gravely wounded.
As his health deteriorated and his kidneys failed, François returned to his family home on the French Atlantic coast, north of Bordeaux. And last month, after years of painful dialysis, François passed away. He is survived, in Seattle, by his widow, Julia Gunn Kissel, and a brother, Jean-Paul Kissel.

In 1969, Julia and Francois Kissel opened a fine French restaurant, Brasserie Pittsbourg, in the basement of the Pioneer Building.
