UN approves invasion of Haiti. Frustrated in its attempt to persuade the military government of Haiti to step down and allow the Rev. Jean-Bertrand Aristide to assume the presidency, which he had won in the December 1990 election, the United Nations Security Council authorized (12-0, with 2 abstentions) a United States-led military invasion of the country if the sanctions already in place failed to force the junta to relinquish power. Gen. Raoul Cedras and his associates, however, were not given a specific deadline after which they would be taken into custody by invading foreign troops.
