Dec 20, 2021 · Kangerlussuaq is one of the best places in Greenland for land-based wildlife observation. Keep a sharp eye out and you may be able to spot reindeer (caribou), musk-oxen, Arctic hare, Arctic foxes, and ptarmigan (grouse) on your excursions.
View map. The town of Kangerlussuaq was established in 1941 when it was opened as a U.S. Air Force base. Americans remained there until 1992. The 25km long road from Kangerlussuaq to the IceCap was originally built by Volkswagen, who used to test their cars for cold climates here.
- Visit the Greenland Ice Cap. The Greenland Ice Cap is one of the world’s largest sheets of ice, and it covers 80% of the vast interior of the island. Kangerlussuaq is the best place in Greenland to access the sheet, or at least a small portion of this massive natural sight, overland, as there is a durable road that leads from the town and out into the ice.
- The Russell Glacier. The Russell Glacier is one of the most accessible glaciers within reach of Kangerlussuaq. It formed from the Greenland Ice Cap, and it slowly moves each year, shifting and straining under the humongous weight of the ice that it’s made from.
