Karl Rapp and Gustav Otto are the founders of BMW. At the request of the German government, Flugmaschinenfabrik Gustav Otto merged with Bayerische Flugzeug-Werke AG (BFW) in 1916. The Rapp Motorenwerke corporation changed into the Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH in 1917, and the latter subsequently became an AG (public limited company) in 1918.

The birth of BMW can be traced back to two men: Karl Rapp and Gustav Otto. Their respective companies – Rapp Motorenwerke and aircraft manufacturers Gustav Otto – produced Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW). The acronym BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH, roughly translating to the Bavarian Engine Works Company.
