His unpaid suspension was lifted and the Vienna police assigned him to a desk job in the "Identification Office" (Erkennungsamt). Silberbauer died in Vienna in 1972. He is interred in Mauer Friedensstrasse cemetery, where his wife Barbara is also interred.
