In Europe, he is still best known for his role in the Sissi (1955) series, although he later starred in several movies of cult director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. After 1981, he was exclusively involved in charitable work in Ethiopia.

With his last wife, Almaz Böhm, he had the children Nicolas Böhm in (b. December 1990) and Aida Böhm (February 1993). During the shooting of Sissi (1955) , Romy Schneider , then 16 years old, used to call him "Uncle Karlheinz", although he played her character's husband in the movie and was just 10 years her senior.
