The Army of Northern Virginia, under General Robert E. Lee, repulsed General Ambrose Burnside's Army of the Potomac on December 13 in the Battle of Fredericksburg. There were over 17,000 casualties that day, half of them falling wounded or dead within sight of Kenmore Plantation.
