Kensington continues today to be known as a Victorian-era garden suburb of Washington, DC. Although the Town has experienced substantial growth since its founding, Kensington remains dedicated to its history with much of the Town designated as Historic.
The railroad and post office adopted the name “Kensington,” as did the community in 1894, when the Town of Kensington was incorporated and Warner’s vision of a Victorian garden community became a reality. Many of Kensington’s late 19th century residents commuted to work in Washington by rail.
Whether you call Kensington home or are just visiting for the day, there is something for everyone right within walking distance. Kensington is a vibrant, social community alive with art galleries, music, restaurants, shops, and a wonderful year-round farmers’ market.
The past cultural and social life of Kensington, as well as its built resources and open spaces, has great meaning to its residents and neighbors. In 1980, the Kensington Historical Society applied to the Maryland Historic Trust (MHT) for a portion of Kensington to have historic district status.

Kensington is a town with a rich, historic past and a vibrant present. The sound of a train whistle still permeates throughout the town, reminiscent of Kensington’s sleepier origins in 1873. Today, residents and visitors alike visit the charming train station for a weekly Farmers’ Market and concerts.
Kensington is a suburb of Washington, D.C. in the Capital Region of Maryland with a population of about 2,100 people in 2020. The main reasons to visit are antique shopping at Antique Row, to see the enormous Mormon Temple, and one great pizza place. Aside from that, it's just a quiet suburban town with some odd quirks.
