Usage & history. The Khmer script is used for writing the official language of Cambodia, and sometimes for Cambodian minority languages, such as Tampuan, Krung, Cham, Brao and Mnong. It is currently in widespread use, although it is estimated that 35% of the Khmer-speaking population aged 15 and over are illiterate in the script.
