Khreshchatyk. The Ukrainian capital has the shortest and widest main street in Europe. Kyiv’s Khreshchatyk is 1.3 kilometres long and connects the European and Bessarabska Squares. Its construction started only in the 19th century, and before that, it had been a wooded marshland called Khreshchatyi Yar.
About the place. Khreshchatyk is one of the shortest (1.23 kilometres) and widest (130 metres) central streets in the world. There are different versions as to the origin of its name. One of them is connected with Khreshchata (meaning “crossed”) Valley which stretched here back in the times of Kyivan Rus and was crossed by ravines.
