  5. This is arguably one of the most terrific one on one fighting scenes that I have recently watched. To wrap it all up, Kickboxer: Retaliation is not a perfect movie but it is more than satisfying and if you are a fan of the quality martial arts actioners, this one won't dissapoint you. 28 out of 55 found this helpful.

Dimitri Logothetis' Kickboxer: Retaliation – the seventh Kickboxer film, and the second in the 2016 rebooted continuity – knows, quite wisely, exactly what any passable fight film ought to contain. That is to say: A good deal of awesome fighting, a capable martial artist in the lead role, additional roles for other notable fighters/celebrities, a good deal more fighting, a mountainous super-villain, high energy, and a story that remains politely in the wings for prolonged periods, only occasionally making itself visible in order to hastily assist the film to its next kick-centric conflict. In short, Retaliation is – perhaps surprisingly – solid, exploitation movie fun.

The capable martial artist in the lead role is Alain Moussi, previously a stuntman on X-Men: Days of Future Past and Suicide Squad, reprising his role as (sigh) Kurt Sloane from 2016's Kickboxer: Vengeance. Kurt was last seen slaying Dave Bautista in a free-for-all underground martial arts competition in Thailand, and is, at the outset of Retaliation, lured back to Bangkok so that he can be taken into custody. He is spirited away to a secret Thai prison reserved exclusively for other murderous kickboxers, including the famed Brazilian soccer star Ronaldinho, and America's own boxing bad boy Mike Tyson.

Kurt will inevitably be approached by shady fight mogul (Christopher Lambert, whose presence invokes memories of 1995's Mortal Kombat) who will blackmail our champion into squaring off with the monstrous Mongkut, a 6'9”, 400-pound obelisk of muscle played by Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (The Mountain from Game of Thrones).

To help him prepare is, of course, Jean-Claude Van Damme, also returning from the 2016 film. Van Damme, to remind ourselves, made himself a household name with the original 1989 Kickboxer, so his appearance lends the proceedings a good deal of affable legitimacy. That he also starred in 1994's Street Fighter only lends Retaliation a much needed dose of daffiness that prevents it from stooping into a film-killing self-seriousness.

To let my mind wander to video games for a moment: Mike Tyson was not only the star of his very own 1987 NES game, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, but was the inspiration for the Street Fighter character M. Bison (whose name was changed to Balrog in America). That means Kickboxer: Retaliation, including Van Damme's and Lambert's participation, has two solid spiritual connections to Street Fighter, one to Mortal Kombat, and one to the NES. Old school gamers, then, may experience an additional minor thrill.

Retaliation is already slated to have a follow-up later this year in the form of Kickboxer: Syndicate, and while the world may not have been aching for this much deep-cut exploration of the 1989 film's complex mythology, we seem to at least be getting treated to reasonably exciting and physically impressive stunt showcases along the way. May all unasked-for fight sequels be as watchable as this one.

While hardly high cinema, Kickboxer: Retaliation is an enjoyable fight epic with some awesome fighting, great cameos, and hugely impressive stunts.
