Kilchurn Castle (/ k əl ˈ x ʊər n /) is a ruined structure on a rocky peninsula at the northeastern end of Loch Awe, in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It was first constructed in the mid-15th century as the base of the Campbells of Glenorchy, who extended both the castle and their territory in the area over the next 150 years.
Dalmally. Argyll. Kilchurn Castle was built in the mid-1400s by Sir Colin Campbell, 1st Lord of Glenorchy. You can currently view the exterior only. In 1432, Colin, second son of Duncan Campbell (later 1st Lord Campbell), was granted Glenorchy, at the north end of Loch Awe.
Overview. Look out over Loch Awe from the powerbase of the Campbells of Glenorchy and one of the most photographed castles in Scotland. Kilchurn Castle was a fortress, a comfortable residence and later a garrison stronghold, and contains the oldest surviving barracks on the British mainland.
