The body of George VI was moved from the Royal Vault on 26 March 1969 and reinterred in the newly-built King George VI Memorial Chapel. His daughter, Princess Margaret, died on 9 February 2002 and, in accordance with her wishes, a private funeral was held at St George's Chapel.

Queen Elizabeth had the chapel built in 1962 as a final resting place for her father King George VI. He died in 1952 and was originally buried in the St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, Norfolk.
