Euphemia of Pomerania. Valdemar IV Atterdag (the epithet meaning "Return of the Day"), or Waldemar (1320 – 24 October 1375) was King of Denmark from 1340 to 1375. [1] He is mostly known for his reunion of Denmark after the bankruptcy and mortgaging of the country to finance wars under previous rulers.

In the Gelre Armorial, dated c. 1340–1370, such a banner is shown alongside the coat of arms of the king of Denmark. This is the earliest known undisputed colour rendering of the Dannebrog. At about the same time, Valdemar IV of Denmark displays a cross in his coat of arms on his Danælog seal (Rettertingsseglet, dated 1356).

Olaf II of Denmark (and IV of Norway) succeeded his maternal grandfather Valdemar IV in 1376. He was the first king to rule Norway and Denmark in personal union.

In 1938 he to his brother-in-law, Margrave Ludwig of Brandenburg, a son of the Emperor. Valdemar IV was installed as king in 1340 by agreement with the Holstein mortgagees.
According to some, the Danish levy navy immediately adopted it as its symbol, making Dannebrog the oldest national flag in continued use. However, real proof of use dates back at best to Valdemar IV (king 1340-75). This way Denmark and Austria can both claim the oldest flag, that of Austria being known on seals from 1230.
