Knapp's Castle is a privately owned landmark ruined mansion in the Santa Ynez Mountains near Santa Barbara, California. It was built in 1916 by George Knapp, the estate included 5 bedrooms, an organ room, and even an observatory. The location was found to be so secluded that they had to build a new road to get to it.

Aug 29, 2020 · Knapp’s Castle is a very popular hike in the hills above Santa Barbara, both because it has fantastic views and because it is less than a mile round trip. As of 2020, the hike is on private property and it is no longer accessible to the public since it is being rebuilt. I left this post up to show what it used to look like though.
According to the Santa Barbara Independent, the Santa Barbara County Planning Department issued a “stop work” order on any construction at Knapp’s Castle at the beginning of 2011. Based on the posted notice, it is possible that changes to the ruins could come in the future. Hike to Knapp’s Castle while you can.
