Jan 6, 2011 · Construction on the lodge was completed in 1920 and for many years served as a popular retreat for Knapp’s guests who were treated to after dinner entertainment courtesy of resident pipe organist Dion Kennedy. In 1940 the 160-acre Knapp property was purchased by Francis Holden, a close friend of the famous opera singer Lotte Lehmann.

Perched on a promontory along a ridge on the north slope of the Santa Ynez Mountains, overlooking the Santa Ynez River Valley, the sandstone ruins known as Knapp’s Castle are the remnants of a remote mountain retreat built by George Owen Knapp. He purchased the property in 1916 and named it Laurel Springs Ranch.
Knapp's Castle is a frequent escape for locals when Santa Barbara is foggy (usually May and June) because the mountain top is usually above the clouds with a spectacular view of a non-foggy backcountry. To drive to Knapp's Castle exit the U.S. 101 Freeway at Highway 154 and then turn east on Camino Cielo Road at the top of the Santa Ynez Mountains.
