Koper, Italian Capodistria, seaport in Slovenia, just southwest of Trieste (Italy). Formerly an island in the Adriatic Sea , it was connected to the mainland by a causeway (1825) and drainage works. It was known to the Romans as Capris (3rd century bce –6th century ce ).
