Freetown Christiania ( Danish: Fristaden Christiania ), also known as Christiania or simply the Staden, is an intentional community and commune in the Christianshavn neighbourhood of the Danish capital city of Copenhagen. It began in 1971 as a squatted military base.

The name came from King Christian IV, who made the big decision after a fire in 1622 to move the whole city from its original location to be close to the Akershus Fortress.

The famous Danish freetown Christiania was founded in 1971 when a group of hippies took over abandoned military barracks and their surrounding along the Christianshavn canals and developed the area to an alternative society with own set of rules, independent of the government.
After the 1859 and 1878 expansion of city borders to include the surrounding Aker municipality, the village of Oslo was included in Christiania municipality. [8] The entire city was named "Oslo" by a law of 11 July 1924, effective 1 January 1925—a decision that caused much debate.
