Krzysztof Wodiczko «The Tijuana Projection» The purpose of the Tijuana Project was to use progressive technology to give voice and visibility to the women who work in the "maquiladora" industry in Tijuana. We designed a headset that integrated a camera and a microphone allowing the wearer to move while keeping the transmitted image in focus.
Krzysztof Wodiczko collaborated with twelve refugees who have been resettled in the United States; their filmed likenesses and spoken narratives are superimposed on the historic 1881 monument to Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, lauded in his day as a Union naval hero during the Civil War.

Krzysztof Wodiczko, The Tijuana Projection (2001). The headset, equipped with a video camera, LED lights and a microphone allows the wearer to project her face and voice in real time onto the facade of El Centro Cultural in Tijuana. Organized and commissioned by INSITE 2000, part of the project in the Border Art Festival of San Diego and Tijuana.
This project was jointly developed by the Wodiczko, Adam Whiton, and Sung Ho Kim. It took place in the Mexican town of Tijuana. Tijuana is a city near the United States border that serves as a jumping off point for those trying to get away from the poverty stricken south. It acts as a place of transition for crossing over the border.
