Kyrenia Castle has stood guard over the important and strategic North Cyprus port of Kyrenia since the 1500s. Although the town of Kyrenia itself has existed since the 10th century BC, the first evidence of the castle is from Roman times, and it was subsequently fortified by the Byzantines.
The history of Kyrenia castle. From the outside, the main noticeable structures of the castle are the large round towers which were built by the Venetians around 1550 AD. These were turbulent times where heavy cannons ruled and the old square towers were easy to breakdown during a siege so the Venetians uprated the towers and made them round.
The original Kyrenia castle was probably built by Byzantines in the 7th Century to guard the city against the new Arab maritime threat. The first historical reference to the castle occurs in 1191, when King Richard the Lionheart of England captured it on his way to the Third Crusade.
