Kyushu, southernmost and third largest of the four main islands of Japan. It is bordered by the East China Sea to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east. Kyushu includes, in addition to the main island, nearby islands and the long Ryukyu archipelago stretching out for some 700 miles (1,100 km) to the southwest.

The East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean border the island towards its west and east, respectively. The Eastern Channel, or Tsushima Strait, separates Kyushu from the Korean Peninsula in the northwest.
