The Plaza Mayor (English: Town square) is a major public space in the heart of Madrid, the capital of Spain. It was once the centre of Old Madrid. [1] It was first built (1580–1619) during the reign of Philip III. Only a few blocks away is another famous plaza, the Puerta del Sol .

The Plaza Mayor can be considered to be the main square in central Madrid. Whenever visting Madrid, you'll get here in one way or in another. The square's history goes back to 1576, although the plaza in it’s current appearance was built in the late 18th century.

El nombre de la plaza La plaza Mayor en el Modelo de Madrid de León Gil de Palacio (1828-1830), Museo de Historia de Madrid. El nombre de la plaza ha variado a lo largo de la historia, del primigenio nombre de «plaza del Arrabal» pasó a llamarse «plaza Mayor».
