With a history as colorful as its trademark homes, Lafayette Square is an interesting intersection of past and present in St. Louis city. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, the 184-year-old neighborhood features tree-lined streets, a picturesque park and numerous eateries and social establishments.
Lafayette Square is a neighborhood in St. Louis, Missouri, which is bounded on the north by Chouteau Avenue, on the south by Interstate 44, on the east by Truman Parkway, and on the west by South Jefferson Avenue. [2] It surrounds Lafayette Park ( see below ), which is the city's oldest public park — created by local ordinance in 1836.

Lafayette Square is St. Louis’ oldest historic district and was declared a National Historic District in 1979. The neighborhood surrounds a 30-acre Victorian Park, which is the oldest park west of the Mississippi River. The park exists as a centerpiece for 375 Victorian homes of French Second Empire, Romanesque, Queen Anne and Federal designs.
The east and west sides of the park began to build up in the 1870’s and 1880’s. As the neighborhood grew, it became home to some of St. Louis’s most prominent citizens, including several majors, congressmen, cabinet members, a Supreme Court Justice and the president of the American Bar Association.
