The GT40 raced at the 1964 (all three cars retired), 1965 (all cars retired), and 1966 (1st, 2nd, 3rd place) LeMans, not just the 1965 and 1966 LeMans like the movie. It takes liberties but it's not the worst representation of the story. It's based on a well researched book "Go Like Hell" if you're interested in the details.
