Goodman was born in Farnborough, Kent (now in London), on 25 April 1944. [2] [3] He grew up in Bethnal Green, East London, where his grandfather worked as a costermonger, selling fruit and vegetables. As a child, Goodman was wheeled around in his grandfather's barrow and tasked with making sure the vegetables appeared to be fresh. [4]
