Levothyroxine is used in adults and children to treat hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid - a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone). Levothyroxine is also used in adults along with surgery and radioactive iodine therapy to treat a certain type of thyroid cancer.
The dose is usually 1.7 microgram (mcg) per kilogram (kg) of body weight per day but may be less in older adults. Children older than 12 years of age (growth and puberty incomplete)—Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. The dose is usually 2 to 3 mcg per kg of body weight per day.

How should this medicine be used? Levothyroxine comes as a tablet and a capsule to take by mouth. It usually is taken once a day on an empty stomach, 30 minutes to 1 hour before breakfast.
