In 1841 Moraga built a two-room adobe home on a hill overlooking what is now the site of Miramonte High School.
Jose Joaquin Moraga died on July 13, 1785 at age 44. His son Gabriel Antonio Moraga also pursued a military career, which involved exploring much of northern and central Alta California. Gabriel died on June 14, 1823 at age 53 after achieving the same rank as his father, lieutenant.
