In 1828, the Oswego Canal was opened, linking Oswego and Lake Ontario to the Erie Canal and thus to the major harbors of New York City and Buffalo. The port of Oswego quickly grew in importance and soon merited a substantial lighthouse. Congress provided just over $12,000 in funds, doled out piecemeal starting in 1834 and continuing through 1837.
Work on the new Sodus Bay Lighthouse began in August 1870 and was completed on June 30, 1871, following the plan used for the lighthouse at Stony Point, New York. The two-story dwelling and attached tower were built of limestone from the Kingston quarries, the same source used to build the lighthouses at Ogdensburg and Sister Islands.
