It is a Romance language spoken in the south of France, the Occitan Valleys of Italy, the Val d'Aran of Catalonia and Monaco. The regions together called Occitania. Of course, this is an unofficial name for a region in three countries! Its justification is that it is united by a culture.
Occitania (Occitan: Occitània [utsiˈtanjɔ, uksiˈtanjɔ], locally [u (k)siˈtanjɔ], [ukʃiˈtanja] or [u (k)siˈtanja]; French: Occitanie [ɔksitani] ⓘ) is the historical region in Southern Europe where the Occitan language was historically spoken [ 1 ] and where it is sometimes used as a second language.
Since 2006, the Occitan language is recognized as one of the official languages in Catalonia, an autonomous region of Spain. The Occitans are concentrated in Occitania, but also in big urban centres in neighbouring regions: Lyon, Paris, Turin, and Barcelona.
Occitan is both one of the great European languages of culture and, as a consequence of policies of ethnocide, one the languages in the most precarious social situation. Nonetheless, despite this difficult position, it is the vehicle for a significant cultural movement.

Historically, the population of what is now called Occitanie, spoke a mix of Basque and Celtic languages. The Occitan Language Council (Conselh de la Lenga Occitana, CLO) is the traditional codification body for Occitan. It was founded in 1996-1997, it worked regularly from 1997 to 2007 and left clear solutions for users to practice Occitan.
