Alabama currently has sixty-seven counties. The oldest county, Washington, was created on June 4, 1800, when what is now Alabama was then part of the Mississippi Territory. Alabama was admitted to the Union as the 22nd state in 1819.  The Alabama state legislature formed additional counties from former Indian lands as the Indian Removal Act took effect and settlers populated different areas of Alabama.  In 1820, Alabama had 29 counties.

Appointment and Commissioning. Notaries in the State of Alabama are appointed and commissioned by the probate judges of the various counties. In accordance with AL Code Section 36-20-70, the probate judge reports to the Secretary of State the name, county of residence, date of issuance and date of expiration of the commission of each notary appointed and commissioned under applicable law.
