- Madam C.J. Walker. Walker, who was born Sarah Breedlove in 1867, invented a hair care treatment for Black women. She traveled around the country demonstrating the “Walker Method,” which involved a pomade that Walker formulated, a brushing technique, and heated combs.
- Thomas Edison. Arguably one of the most famous inventors of all time, Thomas Edison is credited with inventing the first commercially viable incandescent lightbulb.
- Alexander Graham Bell. Alexander Graham Bell is best known for being the primary inventor of the telephone. He founded Bell Telephone Company in 1877 and then went to work on other inventions, including flying machines.
- Frederick Jones. Inventor Frederick Jones was a self-taught engineer, best known for his creation of portable refrigeration units. These units were essential during World War II, as they allowed trucks to transport food, blood, and medicine to army hospitals and soldiers on the frontlines.

- Nicolaus Copernicus. Astronomer and mathematician. 1473-1543. For centuries, people incorrectly believed the Earth was the center of the universe. Copernicus theorized otherwise, with the belief that the size and speed of a planet’s orbit depended on its distance from the centralized sun.
- Galileo Galilei. Physicist and astronomer. 1564-1642. Galileo changed how we literally see the world by taking early telescopes and improving their design. The Italian scientist made lenses capable of magnifying objects twenty-fold.
- Robert Hooke. Astronomer, physicist, and biologist. 1635-1703. Englishman Hooke coined the term “cell,” now known as the basic structural unit of all organisms, in his 1665 book Micrographia after observing the cell walls in slices of cork tissue.
- Sir Isaac Newton. Physicist and mathematician. 1643-1727. You probably know about Newton’s three laws of motion, including that objects will remain at rest or in uniform motion unless acted upon.
- Wilhelm Röntgen. Lived 1845 – 1923. Wilhelm Röntgen was a physics professor. He received the very first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901 for his discovery of X-rays.
- Archimedes. Lived c. 287 BC – c. 212 BC. Archimedes is the best known mathematician and scientist from ancient times. In addition to brilliant discoveries in mathematics and physics, he was also an inventor.
- Robert Hooke. Lived 1635 – 1703. Robert Hooke discovered plant cells and discovered Hooke’s Law – the law of elasticity. He also: invented the balance spring, vital for accurate timekeeping in pocket watches.
- Benjamin Franklin. Lived 1706 – 1790. Benjamin Franklin discovered one of the fundamental laws of physics – the Law of Conservation of Electric Charge – and proved that lightning is electricity.
