James Todd Smith (born January 14, 1968), known professionally as LL Cool J (short for L adies L ove Cool J ames), is an American rapper, songwriter, record producer, and actor. He is one of the earliest rappers to achieve commercial success, alongside fellow new school hip hop acts Beastie Boys and Run-DMC.
As a Def Jam talent, James took on the stage name LL Cool J, which was coined by his friend Mikey D. (Prior to his record deal, he had gone by the name J-Ski. Yikes.) In 1984, shortly after Cool J signed his deal, his very first single—entitled “I Need a Beat”—was released.
