Los Alamos County (English: "The Poplars" or "Cottonwoods") is a county in the U.S. state of New Mexico.As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,950. The smallest county in area of this state was administered exclusively by the U.S. federal government during the Manhattan Project, but now has equal status to New Mexico's other counties.
With an estimated population of 2,096,829 as of the July 1, 2019, U.S. Census Bureau estimate, New Mexico is the 36th largest state by population. With a total area of 121,590 sq mi (314,900 km 2 ), it is the fifth-largest and sixth-least densely populated of the 50 states.
