The fountain is in an enchanted castle guarded by Princess Kathryn. Noble Prince Alfred dispels the curse from the castle with his magic sword, but Alfred's brothers, restored at Alfred's request to human form, cast him in disrepute with the king. Nevertheless, Alfred proves himself; he regains his father's favor and marries the princess.
