Students may be assigned magnet priority points in 5 ways. The sum of these points is utilized in the selection process. Students are selected through a fair and secure computer process, based on verified information. Applicants who remained on a valid on-time Magnet waiting list receive 4 points for the following year.

Each Magnet school offers a subject specialty or special teaching approaches. Magnet students are selected randomly by computer based on LAUSD and court-approved guidelines, ethnic balance, and available space in each program. Transportation is provided to Magnet students outside of a 5-mile radius from Palms. See Magnet Transportation ^.
Magnet programs are court-ordered, racially diverse and balanced, schools created in the 70’s to desegregate LA schools. There are standard magnet schools, gifted/high ability magnet schools, and highly gifted magnet schools. Magnet programs are often centered on a certain theme – science, math, performing arts, technology, etc.
