As the MCU's Phase 5 continues with Loki Season 2's debut, and the DCU reboots itself under James Gunn, it's important to remember that they didn't always hold a monopoly on superhero movies. Or even comic book movies. But as any fan can tell you, the best superhero movies always have a great supervillain. So we figured it was time to look at the best superhero movie villains ever.

The modern age tradition of "hey, that villain was actually more right than wrong" was popularized in a big way with Alan Moore's revolutionary Watchmen comic series from the late '80s and the arch-villain Ozymandias, a "hero" with his 4D chess eyes on the greater good and the actual saving of humanity. Like an A.I. programmed to predict the best overall outcome for a hypothetical armageddon, Ozymandias, played by Matthew Goode in Zack Snyder's film adaptation, sacrificed millions of lives in order to bring the nuclear doomsday clock to a stop. And the best part, of course, was the subversion of the cliched villain monologue. Instead of being his undoing, providing a window for the heroes to stop him, it was simply an explanation after the fact.

The words "I did it 35 minutes ago" haunted a generation.

    • Thanos. With half the universe wiped out with a snap of his fingers, Thanos certainly has the largest kill count of any super villain. After building up to him through more than a dozen movies, the big bad of the Marvel Cinematic Universe didn’t disapoint when he stole the show in “Infinity War.”
    • Joker (Heath Ledger) A posthumous Oscar win puts Heath Ledger’s Joker in the Super Villain Hall of Fame. The Joker has terrorized Batman and Gotham City in comic pages since 1940, but Ledger redefined the iconic character in 2008.
    • Killmonger. Michael B. Jordan was so convincing that he had Marvel fans saying, “Killmonger was right.” Revealed to be an estranged cousin of Black Panther, he arrived at Wakanda to usurp the throne — and succeeded.
    • Harley Quinn. Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn was one of the few high points from the poorly-received “Suicide Squad” from 2016. She brought the loud-mouthed, psychotic villain to life so perfectly that even Paul Dini, the character’s comic book creator, said she nailed it.
