However, without prompt diagnosis and effective treatment, a case of uncomplicated malaria can progress to a severe form of the disease, which is often fatal without treatment.

Treating malaria. Each year, more than 600 000 people die of malaria – a treatable disease. The primary objective of treatment is to ensure the rapid and complete elimination of the parasites causing the disease from a patient’s bloodstream in order to prevent an uncomplicated case of malaria from progressing to severe disease or death.

Most antimalarial drugs target the erythrocytic stage of malaria infection, which is the phase of infection that causes symptomatic illness ( figure 1 ). The extent of pre-erythrocytic (hepatic stage) activity for most antimalarial drugs is not well characterized.
