Malcolm X In December 1953, a little more than a year after he was paroled from prison, Malcolm was named the minister at the NOI’s Boston mosque, Temple No. 11. The following year he also became the minister at Temple No. 12 (Philadelphia) and Temple No. 7 (New York). Muhammad Speaks, the NOI newspaper, was founded by Malcolm in 1957.
Malcolm X, African American leader and prominent figure in the Nation of Islam who articulated concepts of race pride and Black nationalism in the early 1960s. After his assassination, the widespread distribution of his life story, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, made him an ideological hero.
However, there is still a considerable degree of interpretation involved; to the extent that Malcolm X is, quite literally, everything to everyone. To Black nationalists, he is a Black nationalist. To the Nation of Islam, he is a great leader (in public), and a dangerous hell-bound hypocrite (in private).
