Man on Fire is a 1987 action thriller film directed by Élie Chouraqui and starring Scott Glenn and Jade Malle. It is based on the 1980 novel of the same name by A. J. Brief Synopsis. A wealthy family in Italy hires former CIA agent John Creasy to protect their daughter, Samantha, from kidnappers. Creasy, burned-out from the horrors of combat in Vietnam and Beirut, has no interest in guarding a 12-year-old girl but needs the job.
Even though it’s an hour shorter, Man on Fire 1987 takes about the same amount of time as Tony Scott’s remake to cover its burnt-out bodyguard’s bonding with a wealthy family’s young daughter, the subsequent kidnapping, and shift into violent vengeance. Feels longer though, and never as compelling.
