Make a Manhattan cocktail with this recipe using rye or bourbon and sweet vermouth. Either whiskey is fine, though the rye will give you a drier drink.

Though no one agrees on where the Manhattan cocktail was created, it’s an undeniable classic that’s smooth, strong, and a little sweet, too. A Manhattan made with rye whiskey is a rush of flavors: sweet vermouth, cacao and caramel, cherry, and spice with a strong finish that takes you back to whiskey. Bourbon makes a sweeter drink with more fruit and caramel notes. A few tweaks to the classic drink set this one apart — an extra dash of bitters, the option of Hella brand bitters for a touch more sharpness, and an upgrade to an intensely flavorful Luxardo cherry from the usual maraschino. The recipe is a Yummly original created by [Maria C. Hunt](https://www.yummly.com/dish/author/Maria-C-Hunt).

The Manhattan is one of the most popular whiskey cocktails, and has been enjoyed for over a century. The earliest known printed recipe for the Manhattan was published in O. H. Byron's 1884 Modern Bartenders' Guide. The book cites two versions: one made with French vermouth, the other with Italian. The drink is traditionally made with rye whiskey, but some bartenders prefer to use bourbon. You can add a splash of juice from the jar of maraschino cherries if you'd like to add fruity sweetness to the drink, or alternatively, garnish with a lemon peel. More Classic Cocktails

  7. The whiskey-based Manhattan is one of five cocktails named for a New York City borough. It is closely related to the Brooklyn cocktail, [3] which uses dry vermouth and Maraschino liqueur in place of the Manhattan's sweet vermouth, and Amer Picon in place of the Manhattan's angostura bitters .
