Make a Manhattan cocktail with this recipe using rye or bourbon and sweet vermouth. Either whiskey is fine, though the rye will give you a drier drink.

Though no one agrees on where the Manhattan cocktail was created, it’s an undeniable classic that’s smooth, strong, and a little sweet, too. A Manhattan made with rye whiskey is a rush of flavors: sweet vermouth, cacao and caramel, cherry, and spice with a strong finish that takes you back to whiskey. Bourbon makes a sweeter drink with more fruit and caramel notes. A few tweaks to the classic drink set this one apart — an extra dash of bitters, the option of Hella brand bitters for a touch more sharpness, and an upgrade to an intensely flavorful Luxardo cherry from the usual maraschino. The recipe is a Yummly original created by [Maria C. Hunt](https://www.yummly.com/dish/author/Maria-C-Hunt).

The Manhattan is one of the most popular whiskey cocktails, and has been enjoyed for over a century. The earliest known printed recipe for the Manhattan was published in O. H. Byron's 1884 Modern Bartenders' Guide. The book cites two versions: one made with French vermouth, the other with Italian. The drink is traditionally made with rye whiskey, but some bartenders prefer to use bourbon. You can add a splash of juice from the jar of maraschino cherries if you'd like to add fruity sweetness to the drink, or alternatively, garnish with a lemon peel. More Classic Cocktails

Most bars today choose bourbon as the base, but with the rise of rye (and the notion that many believe it was the original spirit used in the drink), you can play around with different American whiskeys. "I prefer rye because that's probably what the original was made with. There was less bourbon in the late 1800s than there is today, so rye would ...

The Manhattan definitely dates back to the 1800s, and likely to America. One of the tall tales touted around the drink's invention was that it was created for one Jennie Jerome—the future Lady Randolph Churchill and the mother of England's most famous prime minister—for the celebration of the election of New York Governor Samuel Tilden at the Manha...

The Churchills aside, there are some hard and fast facts about the Manhattan. One of the most important: Do not shake it (always stir). Spirits-centric drinks like the Manhattan and the Martiniare stirred to add the proper chill and dilution from the ice, and also to keep to the drinks' crystalline aesthetic. (Who wants a cloudy Manhattan? Not even...

The iconic garnish for a Manhattan is a cherry—preferably, a proper Maraschino (not the neon-red banana split kind), Amarena, or brandied cherry, which is Caiafa's choice. Some Manhattan makers also use a twist. "I like both! I'll use a lemon twist if the Manhattan is made with rye, and an orange twist if I'm using bourbon. And a cherry, because wh...

Even a simple three-ingredient drink like the Manhattan is fodder for creativity. "You can make a Marconi Wireless with apple brandy instead of whiskey, a Cuban Manhattan with rum, a Rob Roywith Scotch instead of bourbon or rye, or a Paddy with Irish whiskey," says Caiafa.
