  2. May 22, 2020 · Marcus Samuel was given the hereditary title of Viscount Samuel in 1925. Marcus died on the same day in January 1927 as Fanny, his wife of 45 years. They are buried at Willesden Cemetery beside a memorial to their second son, Gerald, who was killed in action in World War One.

Marcus Samuel, 1st Viscount Bearsted, JP (5 November 1853 – 17 January 1927), known as Sir Marcus Samuel between 1898 and 1921 and subsequently as The Lord Bearsted until 1925, was a Lord Mayor of London and the founder of the Shell Transport and Trading Company, which was later restructured including a Netherlands-based company commonly referred to as Royal Dutch Shell.

In recognition of his services in supplying fuel to the British Empire during World War I, he was finally honored with the newly created title of Viscount Bearsted in 1925.
