Margaret Island (Hungarian: Margitsziget [ˈmɒrɡit.siɡɛt]; German: Margareteninsel; Turkish: Kızadası) is a 2.5 km (1.6 mi) long island, 500 m (550 yd) wide, (0.965 km 2 (238 acres) in area) in the middle of the Danube in central Budapest, Hungary. The island is mostly covered by landscape parks, and is a popular recreational area.

    • Ride in a funky vehicle. We already mentioned above that it takes about an hour to walk across Margaret Island. If you’re travelling with kids or elderly parents, touring it on foot is probably not an option.
    • Climb Margaret Island’s water tower. Margaret Island’s beautiful water tower was built in Art Nouveau style in 1911. It provides water for Margaret Island’s bars, restaurants and hotels.
    • Go squirrel spotting. My favourite activity around Margaret Island was walking around, enjoying the shade and tranquillity of a late summer afternoon.
    • Go for a dip. If you have visited Budapest, you’ll know that the city is famous for its thermal baths. Margaret Island’s very own baths, Palatinus Strand, have a lot more to offer than your standard, stuffy thermal baths.
