Ladd was born in Los Angeles, California, on October 22, 1937. He was the only child of Alan Ladd and Marjorie Jane (née Harrold), who divorced when he was two years old. He initially stayed with his mother, but lived with his father at his estate in Holmby Hills due to her poor health.

Ladd married twice, firstly in 1936 to Marjorie Jane Harrold, and the couple had one son. In 1942 he married his agent, Sue Carol, an ex actress 10 years his senior. The couple had a son and a daughter and the marriage lasted until his death. In 1955 Ladd had an affair with June Allyson, his co star in the McConnell Story'.
Ladd’s streak of good luck continued and, in October of 1936, he married Marjorie Jane Harrold. A year later, in 1937, the couple gave birth to their first child, Alan Ladd, II. Ladd’s early film work consisted of mostly minor parts, such as the role of a reporter in Orson Welles’ 1941 classic, Citizen Kane.
