If you do not know the exact date or place of death: The Ohio Department of Health will search for the death of one individual for free. Searches for additional individuals are available for a fee.
The National Death Index (NDI) is an online repository of all death events in the United States. It currently contains over 100 million public death records from 1979 through the years. Death records are added to the NDI list every year, usually 12 months after the end of a particular calendar year.

May 3, 2024 · Death Records. Death records typically provide the individual’s date of death, the cause of death, residence and additional biographical information. Depending on the time period, there are different ways to access death records. In Ohio, it became a statewide law to record deaths in 1867.
Online orders for 1954-1970 death certificates have resumed. Please note that on-site access to certificates in that range continues to be suspended. If you have questions, please email reference@ohiohistory.org and include order number, name, and date if applicable.
To search death records online, you will be required to produce information such as the deceased's death date, gender, legal name, and city/county where the person died. The online database created by the Ohio Vital Statistics contains death certificates from 1964.
