Later, the system included a Mars Year 0 (defined as beginning May 24, 1953), and so allowing for negative year numbers. That’s similar to the use of A.D. or B.C. in the Gregorian calendar (or, more recently, CE or BCE).

Since the late 20th century, Mars has been explored by uncrewed spacecraft and rovers, with the first flyby by the Mariner 4 probe in 1965, the first Mars orbiter by the Mars 2 probe in 1971, and the first landing by the Viking 1 probe in 1976. As of 2023, there are at least 11 active probes orbiting Mars or at the Martian surface.

Start and End dates of Mars Years were determined for 1607–2141 by Piqueux et al. Earth and Mars dates can be converted in the Mars Climate Database, however, the Mars Years are only rational to apply to events that take place on Mars. Mars Year 1 started on 11 April 1955 and ended on 25 February 1957. Mars Year 1 is preceded by Mars Year 0.

NASA's New Horizon spacecraft flew by Pluto -- exactly 50 years after Mariner 4's first-ever close-up pictures of Mars.
