Dec 6, 2023 · On Nov. 14, 1970, the Marshall team’s plane crashed nose-first into a hillside just one mile from the Huntington Tri-State Airport, setting the whole area ablaze. All 75 people on board were killed in what the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) called an “unsurvivable” crash.
On a rainy hill side in Wayne County, West Virginia, the lives of 75 people were lost in the worst single air tragedy in NCAA sports history. Among the losses were nearly the entire Marshall University football team, coaches, flight crew, numerous fans, and supporters.

The Marshall University Thundering Herd football team had lost a hard-fought game against the East Carolina University Pirates by a score of 17-14.
