He had his first No. 1 country song in 1956 with "El Paso" and won a Grammy Award for his 1959 hit "El Paso". He also wrote songs about Western stories, racing and his personal life.

He recorded country, western, rockabilly, Hawaiian, gospel, and pop music with his specialty being country-pop ballads. He also wrote and published songs, and raced at the Nashville Speedway. He died in a plane crash in 1982.
