Mary Eliza Mahoney (May 7, 1845 – January 4, 1926) was the first African-American to study and work as a professionally trained nurse in the United States. In 1879, Mahoney was the first African American to graduate from an American school of nursing.

Out of a class of 40 entrants, Mary Eliza Mahoney graduated as one of only four students to complete the intensive program and became the first black professionally qualified nurse. For the next 30 years, she worked mainly as a private duty nurse in the homes of wealthy white families.
For the next decade, Mahoney helped recruit nurses to join the NACGN and continued to advocate for quality nursing educations for African-Americans. She began a great wave of change for equality among nurses that continued to grow even after her death.
