Mary was born on February 13, 1457 in Brussels at the ducal castle of Coudenberg. Her father Charles was the son of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy and Isabel of Portugal. His title at the time was Count of Charolais. Her mother was Isabella, daughter of the Duke of Bourbon. On the day Mary was born, her father had left to go hunting.

Maximilian of Burgundy (1514–1558), marquis of Veere and Lord of Beveren, was a noble from the Low Countries in the service of the Habsburgs. Maximilian was the son of Adolf of Burgundy and Anna of Bergen. He was a descendant of Antoine, bastard of Burgundy, illegitimate son of Philip the Good. The marquis of Veere resided at Zandenburg .
